Bumper Stars!

I have been doing internships with Large Animal Games since August. The company is amazing and I am learning a lot from them about how the company works, how the games are created, how to cope with people and to truly respect one another, and how the art collaborates with programmers. I have been really really lucky to have an opportunity to design some of the characters and assets "Bumper Stars" game. It is very simple, fun and addicting! (and I mean ADDICTING!)

If you have facebook, try this...
If not, you can play it here...

These are some screen shots from the game. The colors are waaaaay off (boo to my sucky screen capture thing) It should be much brighter and fun looking!

I designed most of what you see on these screen. Yes even the little gingerbread man, candy cane, snow flake Bumper and the background. BUT I could NEVER never never completed these without the art director, and other artists, producers and programmers. They helped me sooooo much with the whole process and I'm so glad they are honest about everything and give accurate oppinions to make a better game. (I got head aches every night at first hahaha but trying that hard was worth it)

Hope you like this game too!

testing 1. 2! (with textures)

Sunday afternoon is usually my experimenting day. This week I played around with textures. I tried to create "controlled messiness" I'm still learning how to limit myself to use textures.

So these are the results...

textures, textures, textures!

My mind has been focused on textures lately. I really really wish I could find a good paper texture (not patterns, just good paper) but I can't find any that satisfy me. Anyways, I made some textures with ink and brush. I don't know what I'm going to do with these but it was fun:)

On the other hand, veeery random but I went to Halloween parade in New York and I managed to find the creatures from "where the wild things are" from this crowd...! Amazing! Amazing! Amazing! I wish I had the skills to build a big costume like that!

Boss's secret should be kept in his office.

I added 1 image to "naughty and bitter" section tonight. I'm still learning Dreamweaver and it's much much harder than just making everything only in html... so if anything is broken, please let me know:)
Anyways, these are the steps I took...

1. Thumbnails- He was actually a king and naked at this point!
2. Rough Sketch-Very rough sketch, lots of adding, erasing
3. Tight Sketch-I use tracing paper and adjust the positioning of the legs and such.
4. Inking-I don't think much about making a clean line, I rather have an active line which I'm not good at...yet.
5. Coloring-I usually have a color scheme in my head but it takes me about 5 tries to get to what I want (woo photoshop!) I also play a lot with textures. My constant goal is to NOT make it look like digital image.
And here is the finished image!

Conversations with Bubba

This assignment was for a writer who needed illustration with her writing. I did 1 full color illustration and 13 black and white storyboards/sketches. I can't tell you the story but it is really interesting. There are more than 10 characters in her story and it was a challenge to fit them all into 1 illustration. So I drew all the characters separately and composed them in Photoshop. I think I'm going to use this method more often:)

Doodle dump!

One of the reason why I decided to become an illustrator is because I doodle. If there is a pencil or a pen, I can doodle all day. When I used to live in U.K. my family travelled all over Europe. 2 things that my parents gave me during those long trip (we usually travelled by car or a train) was sketchbook and pencil. It was a good idea to keep me busy so I won't get bored. At a restaurant my father drew vegetables with eyes and I drew animals that went with it. At art museums I sketched whatever caught my eye (I still remember standing in front of big Chagall painting thinking "huh, I can draw horses way better than that!" haha) In the train, I used sketchbooks to learn Japanese with my mother. At the hotel room my sister and I stuck postcards, leaf, flowers, stamps, receipts and random findings onto the sketchbook.

I still doodle. And here are some random doodles i did recently.

And these aren't doodles... but in my mind it's still doodle so I am going to throw it in!

SCAD catalog...:)

So I did a photo shoot with a guy who photographs for SCAD catalog earlier this year. I completely forgot about it until today, and apparently they have an online catalogue now. High tech! (at least to me anyway) So here is me, smiling awkwardly with a face of "I am tired and my eyes look so Asian, and you made me smile" .......Enjoy!:) ( for more info)

Some inspirations...

So lately I have been researching a lot of interesting things, and trying to figure out what I truly like. And after gathering my favorites, I started to notice my favorite color palette, what makes me laugh, smile, cry, and what to appreciate.

These are some of my favorite movies. I especially love "LEON"
When I saw Klimt's "the kiss" when I was about 8 years old, I remember just standing in front of it and cold not move. My mother was next to me, and we just stood there. The size, colors, material, her expression, everything was dreamy. I still am in love with this painting. I also started collecting "ICON" books by Taschen. It's kind of my excuse to visit their store in Soho though;) My mother sent me books of cute design in Russia, cute stamps in Europe, and cute designs in Europe. LOVE!

So many amazing inspirations! some day I want to have a library full of my favorite inspirations just like my mother has children's book library in her house!
